What happens when you practice with others?
By Simone Claridge · True Better You
I have been asked this question more than almost any other.
Not "what is N-Tone?" Not "how does Mingjue work?" But this one, quietly, by people who are already close to the door:
What actually happens when you practice together?
I want to answer it honestly. Not with theory. With what I keep noticing.
Before we begin each morning, we build the field.
This is not optional. It is the practice before the practice.
Grandmaster Pang Ming developed a precise sequence for this — eight lines, each one carrying the body and mind from wherever the day has left you toward the state where practice can actually begin.
Head touches sky. Feet stand on earth.
The body relaxes. The mind expands.
Quiet outside. Quiet inside.
Mind clear. Appearance humble.
No distracting thoughts. Mind expands into infinite space.
Mind shines into the body. Entire body harmonized with Qi.
Eight lines. Five minutes. And something shifts.
Without this, practice still happens. But it takes longer to arrive. The first twenty minutes of chanting do what the field-building was designed to do. And sometimes you don't quite get there at all — the surface settles a little, but the deeper layers stay closed.
This is why we don't skip it. Not because it is ritual. Because it works.
Then we begin.
Muted. No cameras. No conversation. Grandmaster Pang Ming's recordings start and we chant N together. The same sound. The same rhythm. One direction of consciousness, chosen and sustained.
Single-mindedly.
That word matters. It is the opposite of how most of us spend most of our time. There are almost always several things pulling at once — the unfinished thought, the background worry, the half-processed conversation from yesterday. Even in solo practice, the mind wanders and is brought back, wanders again, is brought back again.
But when a group practices together — field set, same rhythm, same intention — something about the single-mindedness becomes easier to sustain. Not forced. Not even noticed, exactly. Just: the pull in other directions is less. The field holds something that the individual mind struggles to hold alone.
There is a principle in physics that explains what happens on bridges.
When people walk across a bridge in the same rhythm — not intentionally, just naturally falling into step — the synchronized vibration can build until the bridge itself begins to sway. Engineers have a name for it: resonance. The Millennium Bridge in London had to be closed two days after it opened because pedestrians fell into the same rhythm and the lateral sway became powerful enough to threaten the structure.
No single person could have done that. The resonance was the thing. Coherent, synchronized vibration creating something qualitatively different from the sum of individual walkers.
This is what I keep noticing in the morning sessions.
Not louder. Not multiplied by headcount. Something different in quality. When everyone sets the field, faces the same direction, chants in the same rhythm with one intention — the resonance builds into something that solo practice, however consistent, doesn't quite generate.
Teacher Wei teaches that when practitioners hold Mingjue — the clear, awakened awareness that is our true nature — together, they build what he calls the world Mingjue consciousness field. This isn't metaphor. It is the most precise description of what I have experienced. The field that forms is real. And it can support people who couldn't quite get there on their own.
I don't fully know how to explain what happens in those mornings.
What I notice is this: something in me relaxes when I am not the only one chanting. Not because anyone is listening, not because the sound is bigger. But because the single-mindedness holds longer when it is shared. The wandering mind has less to wander into. The field does some of the work that my effort alone would have to do.
And someone comes in carrying their morning — the difficult dream, the thing they are worried about — and somewhere in the first five minutes, the body stops defending. Not because anything resolved. Because the field around them was already at rest, and the body recognized it was safe to follow.
One person settling gives another permission to settle.
I have watched this happen so many times that I have stopped being surprised by it. I just keep showing up, because it keeps being true.
